Itinerary

  1. 8:30 AM Bus/Cab to Kinkaku-ji

From Hotel Monterey, bus 205 or cab to Kinkaku-ji (~25 min). Aim to arrive at the 9 AM opening before the tour buses.

  2. Covered in actual gold leaf, reflected in the mirror pond. It's as stunning as every photo suggests. The garden walk-through is one-way and takes about 30 min. Arrive right at opening.

  3. Short bus or 20 min walk from Kinkaku-ji. Home to Japan's most famous rock garden — 15 stones arranged so you can never see all of them at once from any angle. Sit on the veranda and contemplate. The pond garden grounds are also worth a slow loop.

  4. 11:30 AM Bus East to Ginkaku-ji Area

Bus 59 or similar toward the Philosopher's Path start at Ginkaku-ji. ~30 min. Good time to rest your feet.

  5. 12:15 PM Lunch near Ginkaku-ji

Several small cafes and soba/udon spots along the approach to Ginkaku-ji. Keep it light — there's a 2 km walk ahead.

  6. Despite the name, it was never covered in silver — but arguably more beautiful than the Golden Pavilion. The sand garden (Ginshadan) represents the sea, with a cone (Kogetsudai) representing Mt. Fuji.

  7. A 2 km stone path along a canal, lined with hundreds of cherry trees. Named after philosopher Nishida Kitaro who walked here daily in meditation. In mid-April, cherry petals float in the canal ("hanaikada") — one of Kyoto's great sights.

  8. Tucked up a side path off the Philosopher's Path. Thatched gate, moss garden, quiet atmosphere. The sand mounds at the entrance change with the seasons. Free, serene, and often missed by tourists.

  9. One of Kyoto's most important Zen temples at the south end of the Philosopher's Path. The massive sanmon gate offers panoramic views from the top (extra fee). The Meiji-era brick aqueduct running through the grounds is surreal — Roman engineering meets Zen temple. Don't miss the Hojo garden.

  10. Short cab ride back to Karasuma. Rest, change, head out for dinner and jazz in central Kyoto.

  11. Classic Kyoto jazz bar in Kawaramachi — small, intimate, great vinyl collection. Have dinner nearby first, then settle in for a drink and some jazz. 10 min walk from the hotel.

Tips

  • Kinkaku-ji opens 9 AM — arrive right at opening, it gets mobbed by 10
  • Kinkaku-ji + Ryoan-ji are 20 min apart — do them as a pair before anything else
  • Bus 59 connects Ryoan-ji → Ginkaku-ji area directly — no need to go back to Kyoto Station
  • Philosopher's Path is walked north to south (Ginkaku-ji → Nanzen-ji)
  • Nanzen-ji's sanmon gate climb is worth the extra ¥600 for the views
