Why Gero?
Gero Onsen is one of Japan’s Three Great Onsen (alongside Kusatsu and Arima) — famous for its silky alkaline springs that leave your skin incredibly smooth. The compact riverside town is the perfect pace reset between Nagoya’s city buzz and Takayama’s old-town exploration.
- World-class onsen — alkaline springs (pH 9.18), known as “beauty water”
- Cherry blossoms — early-mid April is peak sakura along the Hida River
- Compact and walkable — everything within 15 min of the station
- Free foot baths — scattered throughout town, perfect for a soaking stroll
- Yumeguri Tegata — bath-hopping pass to sample different ryokan baths
Getting There
From Nagoya (Hida Limited Express):
- ~90 minutes
- ~¥4,500 one-way

- Follow the riverbank to Gero Bridge — scenic views framed by mountains and ryokan
- Funsenchi open-air bath is at the south end of Gero Bridge

Onsen Town Loop
From the river, head up into the onsen town streets (Yunomachi-dori). Pass Kaeru Shrine, foot baths, souvenir shops, food stalls. The whole district is within ~1 km. Gentle incline away from the river.
Cherry Blossoms
Early-mid April is peak sakura in Gero. Your dates (Apr 8-10) should catch blossoms along the Hida River banks, on the Onsenji Temple stone steps, and in Gassho Village’s Saijiki no Mori hilltop forest. Evening illuminations at Shirasagi Green Park.
