Morning Markets + Jinya + Brewery Tour

Early markets, Edo government, sake deep dive

Old Town / Markets 4-5 miles

Day 2 Locations

7 locations

Itinerary

  1. The larger of two morning markets, stretching along the river. Local produce, pickles, crafts, flowers, Hida folk art. Farmers selling direct. 6am-noon. Best early when it's quiet and fresh.

  2. Smaller, more traditional market in front of Takayama Jinya. Fewer stalls but more local character. Sarubobo dolls (Hida good-luck charms), pickled vegetables, homemade crafts.

  3. 8:30 AM Breakfast near Markets

Grab something from the market stalls or find a local cafe. Mitarashi dango for a sweet start.

  4. The only surviving Edo-period provincial government building in Japan. Beautifully preserved rooms — audience halls, interrogation rooms (with original implements), rice granaries. Excellent English audio guide. Budget 1-1.5 hours.

  5. Site of the autumn Takayama Festival. Peaceful hilltop shrine with old trees. The Festival Floats Hall is adjacent.

  6. Four of the ornate yatai (festival floats) from the famous Takayama Festival are displayed on rotation. Intricate carvings, lacquerwork, mechanical puppets. The festivals (spring & autumn) are among Japan's most celebrated.

  7. 12:00 PM Lunch in Sanmachi

More Hida beef, soba noodles, or try ramen. Plenty of options along the old town streets.

  8. Deeper dive into 2-3 breweries. Funasaka, Harada, and Kawashiri are among the best. Some offer guided tours in English. Learn about the brewing process, taste different grades. The water from the Japanese Alps is what makes Takayama sake special.

  9. Magnificent Meiji-era merchant house with massive exposed beams and traditional architecture. Shows how wealthy Takayama merchants lived. Well-preserved and atmospheric.

  10. 4:30 PM Hotel Onsen

Evening soak. Rest up for the Shirakawa-go day trip tomorrow.

  11. 6:30 PM Dinner — Local Izakaya

Try hoba miso (miso with vegetables grilled on a magnolia leaf over charcoal) and more Hida beef. Relaxed evening.
