Itinerary

  1. Hida Express from Nagoya (~90 min). Compact town — everything within 15 min walk. Pick up a map and Yumeguri Tegata info at the tourist info desk inside the station.

  2. Gero's iconic street food — seared wagyu on vinegared rice, eaten by hand. Yushimaan near the river is the go-to spot. Quick, standing, delicious.

  3. The essential Gero walk. Follow the river south from Shirasagi Bridge past Gero Bridge — cherry blossoms lining the banks, mountains framing everything. Flat and paved. Stop at foot baths along the way.

  4. Free riverside bath right on the Hida River bank. Swimsuit required. Mountain and river views. 3 min from station. Worth seeing even if you don't soak.

  5. 2:00 PM Kaeru Shrine

"Gero" sounds like a frog croaking — so frogs are everywhere in town. This quirky shrine is full of frog statues. Wishes for safe travel. Foot bath nearby.

  6. Small shrine at Shirasagi Bridge giving thanks for the hot springs. Quick stop.

  7. Premium onsen resort. Multiple indoor mineral baths, sauna. Buffet dinner and breakfast included. 7 min walk from station.

  8. 3:30 PM First Hotel Onsen Soak

Gero's famous alkaline springs (pH 9.18) — "beauty water" that leaves skin silky smooth. One of Japan's Three Great Onsen. Take your time.

  9. 6:00 PM Hotel Buffet Dinner

Included. Sukiyaki, all-you-can-drink. Relax after a travel day.

  10. Illuminated sakura along the river. Magical atmosphere with steam rising from the hot springs. Short walk from hotel.

Tips

  • Carry a small towel — you'll stumble onto free foot baths everywhere
  • Shirasagi no Yu (oldest bathhouse) is closed Wednesdays — visit tomorrow
  • The hotel onsen is yours for the whole stay — no rush, soak often
  • Evening cherry blossom illumination is best after dark
