Itinerary

  1. 6:30 AM Early Morning Hotel Onsen

Beat the crowds. Morning soak with mountain air.

  2. 7:30 AM Hotel Buffet Breakfast

Included. Fuel up for a full day.

  3. At the Gassho Village entrance. Local produce — tomatoes (Gero specialty), pickles, blueberries, handmade souvenirs. 8am-noon, April through November.

  4. Open-air museum with 10 relocated gassho-zukuri (praying-hands) thatched farmhouses. Try ceramic painting, washi paper making, or watch shadow puppet theater. Cherry blossoms in the Saijiki no Mori hilltop forest. Budget 1.5-2 hours.

  5. Gero's soul food — chicken marinated in miso/soy, grilled with cabbage at your table. Only found in this region. 50+ year family restaurant also known for hoba miso and river fish.

  6. Dedicated to hot spring science, geology, and culture. Includes a foot bath and a walking bath (stone foot massage path). Small but interesting.

  7. 1:30 PM Yumeguri Tegata Bath Hopping

Buy the wooden tablet pass (~¥1,300) at the tourist info center. Good for 3 different ryokan baths (12+ participating). Peel off one sticker per ryokan. Individual entries ¥800-1,200 each — saves up to 50%. Pick 2 today.

  8. Gero's oldest public bathhouse (~100 years), charming Romanesque facade. Closed Wednesdays — today is Thursday, so it's open. Towel ~¥200 extra.

  9. Hilltop temple to Yakushi Nyorai (Healing Buddha) who revealed the hot springs. 173 stone steps lined with cherry blossoms. Panoramic mountain views from top. Take it slow.

  10. 5:30 PM Snack — Yuami-ya

Ontama soft serve (ice cream topped with hot spring egg) at a foot bath spot. Soak your feet and eat ice cream.

  11. 6:00 PM Dinner — Hotel Buffet or Town

Buffet is included, but consider asking about skipping one evening to try Nakasa (former Michelin one-star soba) or hoba miso at Yamabiko.

  12. 8:00 PM Final Evening Onsen + Foot Bath Stroll

One more soak at the hotel. Pack tonight — checkout is 11 AM tomorrow.
