Nara Day Trip — Great Buddha + Sacred Deer
Ancient capital, world's largest bronze Buddha, 1,200 deer
Day 5 Locations
Itinerary
- 8:00 AM Train to Nara
JR Nara Line from Kyoto Station or Kintetsu from Kyoto Station. ~45 min. Kintetsu drops you slightly closer to the deer park. Either works. From Gion: ~15 min to Kyoto Station first.
- ~9:00 AM Arrive Nara
Walk east from the station toward Nara Park — you'll start seeing deer within 10 minutes. Buy shika senbei (deer crackers, ¥200) to feed them. They bow for food!
- 9:45 AM Todai-ji Temple
Houses the Daibutsu — the world's largest bronze Buddha (15m tall) inside the world's largest wooden building. It's jaw-dropping even if you've seen photos. The scale is hard to comprehend until you're standing inside. Try squeezing through the pillar hole for good luck.
- 11:15 AM Nigatsu-do Hall
Part of the Todai-ji complex, up on the hillside. The balcony offers panoramic views over Nara Park and the city. Free entry. The approach through the temple grounds is beautiful.
- 11:45 AM Nara Park Deer
Over 1,200 sacred sika deer roam freely. They're considered divine messengers of the Kasuga Shrine gods. Most are gentle (watch for the pushy ones!). Best interactions in the open meadow areas.
- 12:45 PM Lunch in Nara
Try kakinoha-zushi (sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves — a Nara specialty) or find a restaurant on Sanjo-dori shopping street. Mochi is also a Nara thing.
- 2:00 PM Kasuga Taisha Shrine
3,000 stone and bronze lanterns — one of Japan's most atmospheric shrines. The approach through the primeval forest is stunning. Moss-covered lanterns, enormous cedars, dappled light. Twice a year all lanterns are lit.
- 3:30 PM Nara-machi
The old merchant district south of the park. Narrow lanes, machiya townhouses converted to cafes and craft shops. More intimate than Kyoto's tourist zones. Good for souvenirs and a quiet coffee.
- 4:30 PM Train back to Kyoto
~45 min return. Rest on the train.
- 6:30 PM Farewell Kyoto Dinner
Last night in Kyoto — splurge on kaiseki (multi-course Kyoto haute cuisine) if you haven't yet. Or find your favorite Gion spot for a repeat visit. Soak it in.
-
Final evening stroll through Gion. The Shirakawa canal area north of Shijo has willow trees, stone bridges, and lantern-lit tea houses reflected in the water. Magical at night.
Tips
- Deer senbei are ¥200 — the deer know what the packet looks like and will mob you
- Todai-ji is busiest 10 AM - 2 PM — arrive early
- The pillar hole at Todai-ji is said to grant enlightenment if you fit through — it's tight!
- Nara is very walkable but it's a LOT of walking — pace yourself
- Last night in Kyoto — consider kaiseki for a proper send-off
