Itinerary

  1. Pack up, check out. Drop luggage at Kyoto Station coin lockers (10 min cab) or send by takkyubin to your Osaka hotel if you want to travel hands-free. The Railway Museum is a 15-min walk west of Kyoto Station in Umekoji Park.

  2. Opens 10 AM. One of Japan's best rail museums — 53 historic trains from Meiji-era steam locomotives to the original 0-series Shinkansen. Interactive driving simulators, a working roundhouse with live steam demonstrations, a rooftop deck overlooking the active JR tracks (watch Shinkansen fly by below). 2-3 hours is plenty. Closed Wednesdays — Monday works.

  3. 12:30 PM Lunch — Umekoji Park or Kyoto Station

The museum has a café with views onto the tracks (the novelty is the point). Or walk 15 min back to Kyoto Station and hit the ramen street / depachika for a final Kyoto meal.

  4. Pick up bags from the locker (or confirm takkyubin delivery to Osaka hotel). Local train from Kyoto Station to Osaka (~30 min, ~¥600). Quick, easy transition. Or splurge on a Shinkansen (~15 min) if you want to arrive faster.

  5. 2:15 PM Arrive Osaka

On to the next leg. Kyoto is behind you.

Tips

  • Railway Museum opens 10 AM and is closed Wednesdays — Monday morning works perfectly
  • Kyoto Station lockers fill up — use the ones on the B1 or west side
  • Takkyubin your bags to the Osaka hotel in the morning for a totally hands-free final day
  • The Umekoji Park area around the museum is also pleasant if you arrive early
